Final Music Video

This is our final music video. Myself and my group were pleased with the outcome, we felt that it conformed to the codes and conventions of a indie/pop music video well.

Final Digipak

My final digipak. I made some changes that my teacher suggested, I added my artists name in the spines of my digipak and added the album name on the front cover of my digipak. I also changed one of my discs to make it obvious that one is a CD and the other is the music video. To make this change I reversed the background disc designs. I also labelled my discs, Disc 1 and Disc 2.

Final Poster

This is my final poster that I have produced. I put the album name (VIVID) and artist name (Aaliyah-a) in big bold text, a classic conventions of a poster.  In the centre of my poster I put the single and song featured in my music video, the readers eye will be drawn to the centre of the poster particularly because it is white text against a black background. My artists name is at the bottom of the poster along with her contact details and the record company logo, I also added copy right. I used the same image as the front cover on my digipak to tie it all together. Finally, I added reviews from NME and Timeout. NME are very relevant and target my primary audience opposed to a reviewer such as the Daily Mail. Timeout is a British media company which is publisher of magazines covering events, entertainment and culture in cities around the world, so i decided they are also relevant reviewers for my poster. 

Final Digipak Explanation

My digipak design represents London and its culture. I wanted my digipak to have a urban and rough feel to it opposed to being 'clean cut', this is portrayed in my digipak mainly through my front cover and discs. My front cover is a photo of the artist (Vivid) it is a face on shot which I wanted to be emotionless. I opted for a emotionless photo as the song for our music video has sad elements to it where she sings 'he doesn't love me', so I decided I didn't want happy facial expressions as it would be slightly opposing.  On the other hand I didn't want a posey unnatural picture as I felt this would also look out of place. The photo was taken by myself in London Southbank tunnel, the graffiti is very effective for making Tolnai stand out and creating that rough, unclean feel.

I used two photos from the internet, (bottom left corner and middle top row) as they relate to my music video. Cigarettes have that urban, edgy association which is especially seen in music videos, and the picture about love reflects the narrative of the song which we try to put across slightly in our music video. I edited both the photos to make them a darker pink and changed the contrast on them until I got my desired result.

The back cover of my digipak has the song names, barcode and copyright on it. I decided to make the background bricks to add texture and emphasis the rough look I was going for. I took a normal picture of bricks from the internet and placed it on top of a pink background so they became pink. I was really happy with the outcome because the texture of the bricks meant that there was multiple shades of pink so nothing looked out of place on my digipak. I used this same brick background for my discs.

Originally I had edited a picture of a rose to fit my discs however the brick background and rose wasn't working as a combination. Then I had the idea that you find graffiti on walls so I decided to made my discs graffiti considering the background was a brick wall, this massively reflects the streets of London as well as being brightly coloured to represent my artists name, Vivid. This idea also ties in with my front cover as there is graffiti in that particular photo. I added a few last touches such as the black rectangles across each section. The black rectangles bring it all together as previously it was very bright apart from Tolani's clothing.

Poster

This is my first attempt at my poster, I used the same photo as on the front of my digipak which I plan to keep. I added the social media links below and my artists name on top. I am unsure about where to place the reviews because of the different colours on the photo I'm using, it is proving hard to find a text colour that stands out. I tried to add a shadow as you can see on the Daily Mail review but I feel that the white text makes it look cheap.

Poster Research

This is an example of a music video poster. As you can see the artist name is in bold, clear writing at the top of the poster, the album name is in an even bigger font below the picture in the centre of the poster, and below that in a smaller print is the main single. The record company details and contact details are also at the very bottom of the poster in a very small font. The layout of this poster is very simple and draws the eye to what they want the reader to focus on, the artist and album. The picture featured on the poster is also the same as on the digipak to create a link. 

Final Digipak

The previous feedback I received on my previous digipak was that the colour palette was too wide and i didn't have a main colour. The pictures with the blurred edit ended up being too overwhelming visually, there wasn't a main focus. To resolve this I have only one photo of my artist on the front cover to draw attention there. Even though I edited the lighting and contrast on this photo I decided not to blur it and avoid making the digipak overwhelming to look at. I also decided that pink was going to be my main colour, the use of different shades of pink add texture to my digipak.

Change of Artist Name

Myself and my group  decided that our artist will no longer be called VIVID instead our album will be called VIVID and our artist will be called Aaliyah-a. We chose this name because it is still an unique, edgy name so still reflects the style of our music video through our artists name. I will make this change clear in my digipak and poster.

Filming

Today we filmed the last shots for our music video, we filmed in a dark room with lights specifically on Tolani. We decided to add some bland, dark footage into our music video as the feedback we revived was that our video was too happy instead of projecting a little bit of heartbreak. Below are some stills to give a example of the scenery we filmed in.

Your blog is looking fantastic; you’re achieving exactly the right level of reflectiveness and documenting your process. Your posts could perhaps be slightly more varied in terms of using the blog technology but this is a minor criticism in the grand scheme of the project. If you’re after full marks though…?!

Digipak vol 2 (NEW)

I made huge changes to my digipak today based on the feedback I received on my first attempt. My main colours are neon pink, blue and black with no red. I like that the photos I chose have quite vivid backgrounds, as this will reflect the name of my artist. I think the pink works well as it lightens it up and stops it from looking too dark. I plan to put another image of Tolani in the blank space with a dark background however with other bright elements and edit it similarly, making it look hazy and edgy. I also need to add the barcode and some other typography. After I have done this I will ask for feedback from my teacher again.

New Photos For Digipak

I edited the photo on the left in order to make it seem more edgy. I made the background black (it was originally red), I then duplicated the layer and lowered the percentage of the opacity of the photo on photoshop. After, I shifted the photo slightly and repeated it multiple times.

Filming in London day

Today me and my group filmed in London in Soho, China Town and around Charring Cross. We also took still shots to potentially use in our digipak.

Narrative Change

Our initial idea was to film scenes where later on in the music video we would reveal flashbacks of both the protagonist and her boyfriend together as part of a 'happier times' montage of clips. Also starting the video as sad facial expressions and moods from the main character. 

Our plan is to now start the music video very happy and then later on, during the bridge, reveal the antagonist in 1 or 2 scenes and ending it sadly. 

Digipak vol 1

This is my first attempt of making my digipak. I took inspiration for the rose on the CD from the Lana Del Rey digipak that I analysed. I received feedback from my teacher explaining that neon and red don't mix well and that it has too many colours on it. I plan to change my digipak where appropriate and make these changes.

Photo Edits

I edited my second image for my digipak, I used a neon yellow to represent my artists name Vivid opposed to the last photo which had red. I used the same technique and made Tolani hazy whilst keeping the rest of the image normal.
